Ok, not to risk a Summon Aaron conjuration here, but Fredrich Nietzsche?
Battle not with monsters
lest ye become a monster
Generally I've heard this one mis-summed up as "Monsters we are, lest monsters we become" for some reason. The mis-summation I can understand, basically a notion of one might have to do horrible things on purpose in order to be able to tell when they're starting to do horrible things offhandedly. The actual quote's also pretty easy to understand; basically a warning not to drop down to other folks' levels. But...
and if you gaze into the abyss
the abyss gazes into you.
..ok, pardon my French but ...the hell?! Does anyone out there in TV-Land know what Freddy was talking about in this abyss bit?
