Facebook New Messaging System

Hello and welcome to a cautionary tale from the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future. You are interested in the unknown... the mysterious. The unexplainable. That is why you are here.

Ok, so if you haven't heard about the pending new Facebook "New Messages", you can read about it here (presuming you have a Facebook account. If you don't, please remain in your houses until Homeland Security can send a team to 'assist' you in assimilating).

Sounds a bit keen, no?

No.

Here's how the new inbox looks.

See the little o and x over on the far right? The 'o' marks it as unread, while the 'x' Archives it. To actually delete something takes a little more work. Much like before, if there's a little left-facing arrow at the start of the tagline, it shows it's one that ended with you replying (as opposed to the ones that ended with the other person replying). The little paperclip (as seen in the message to Kato) shows a file was included, which is nice, and if it's sent to multiple folks (as seen at the bottom, in the message to Sarah and Sarita), you get a little split-screen affair.

Here, we see what it looks like when one opens a message.

Ok, over on the right, some of them have a little speech balloon, while others don't. The ones with speech balloons are archived chat messages, while the ones without are normal mail-type messages. It compiles all your communication with a given person into one mess mass thread. All of it. Even if I had different mailed conversations with Jess in the past, they're all one big thread now with no room for a new subject line.

Note also the lack of "Next Message" & "Previous Message" arrows up top.

If I'd screen-grabbed a further along part, you'd see how I replied to something Jess said, but FB decided to have it send as a mail-type message instead of a chat-type message (she's on the standard non-new system, so it pretty much appeared to her like I was being a freak).

Looking down at the bottom, we have a paperclip that allows one to attach a file. Could be a picture, a sound-file, a text-file, anything. No clue what the size limit is. This is one of the few good things. The little camera next to it is if I want to live-record something. The GameBoy ticky-box is if I want to use text messages, and the crooked-arrow ticky-box is if I want hitting Enter to send it (if ticked) or to insert a carriage return (if unticked). Let's look up at that Actions box!

This is the top right of the previous one.

Mark As Unread, which I could've done from the get-go.
Forward, which is nice. This and the file attachment feature are about the only good new things.
Archive just sort of hides it behind the cupboard.
Delete deletes, Mark as Spam marks as spam, blah blah blah...
Move to Other is odd.

Ok, so there's the primary message box, and then there's "other" for things from Non-Friends and from Groups. I have the sneaking suspicion that this will make non-friends even less likely to read and reply to messages (which I've had a problem with in the past)

So, yeah. Not very impressed with it as a whole.

Pull the strings!

PS: 150 over 83?! I blame the wasabi peanuts.
PPS: And the Throwback Mountain Dew might have something to do with it, too.
