Long ago and far away, I read (in Andy Warhol's Interview magazine) a very promising review of Sophie B. Hawkins' album "Tongues and Tails". I went out, picked it up, gave it a listen and.. eh. I've tried about a dozen times and I still can't make it through the whole album. It's just so darn mediocre and/or annoying.

But! But! I was listening to National Public Radio while late for work today and I heard a something by a someone that actually seemed to fit what I had expected of Ms.Hawkins all those years ago.

Jesca Hoop. Her home-page is here (caution! Flash!), and you can hear three of her songs over here. She also has a Myspace page.

It's got a little Regina Spektor to it, a little of the better Sheryl Crow, and Tom Waits has this to say about her: "Jesca Hoop's music is like a four sided coin. She is an old soul, like a black pearl, a good witch or a red moon. Her music is like going swimming in a lake at night." (apparently he heard her, got a demo tape of songs, and did a little promoting of her music).
